Two dances, two moods

Kecak or Legong is a choice between a crowd and a courtyard. Kecak, in the ministry's description, is performed by tens to hundreds of male dancers sitting in a circle and chanting "cak, cak, cak".5 Legong, by contrast, is a court dance that the ministry places in the 17th or 18th century, in the age of Bali's royal courts.6

One page from the same ministry gives the Kecak chorus as about 50 to 60 men around a set of torches, and describes the dance as an open-air show around sunset, often on a clifftop facing the ocean.7,8 Our Legong ticket belongs to a courtyard show at Ubud Palace, daily at 7:30 PM.

Think of it as ensemble versus detail. Kecak is a wall of sound with a circle of bodies around a flame. The Legong dance in Ubud asks you to lean in and follow fingers, eyes and gold crowns. Both are good evenings, and neither asks for prior knowledge.

Neither is a performance you only watch. The Legong rewards close looking, and the Kecak invites you to feel the rhythm of overlapping voices in your chest. Choose by the way you like to pay attention, and the rest of this page will help you book the right night.

Sound and story come from the Indonesian tourism ministry; times, arrival advice and refunds from the two GetYourGuide listings.1,2

What you hear: voices against bronze

The sound is the plainest difference. Kecak has no gamelan; it is accompanied only by the chanting of a chorus of men, led by a soloist who indicates the high and low notes and also narrates.2,9 The ministry says the dance depends on the rhythm of voices alone.5

Legong sits on the other side of that line. The dance draws on the compositions of gamelan gong kebyar, a traditional Balinese orchestra, and the ministry derives the word itself from "leg", graceful movement, joined to "gong", the gamelan.1,10 Reviewers of our ticket mention the live music alongside the dancers and costumes.

If you love percussion and layered rhythm, the Legong evening puts a full orchestra a few meters away. If you prefer a human voice doing everything, Kecak does exactly that. Each is a good way to hear Bali, and the contrast makes a second evening tempting.

What you see: story, fire and gold

Kecak relates a shorter version of the Ramayana epic, and its dramatic scene shows Hanoman captured and put inside a circle of fire.4,11 The ministry says the dance first appeared in 1930, when dancer Wayan Limbak and painter Walter Spies reworked the Sanghyang ritual with the Ramayana.13

Legong Kraton recounts the story of a Balinese king and his court, and the ministry adds that Legong as a whole draws on Balinese folklore and Hindu epics such as the Ramayana.3,14 The costume does much of the work: ornate golden headdresses, silk sarongs and shimmering accessories.12

Where Kecak delivers its drama through one large group and a flame, the Legong delivers it through two or three dancers and a gesture. Follow the hands and eyes: the mudra and the seledet, as the ministry names them.15,16 You can enjoy either without knowing the plot, and the booklet at the palace entrance helps with the Legong.

Where you sit and when you arrive

The palace show is a fixed evening: daily at 7:30 PM, about 90 minutes, and the listing recommends being there 45 minutes or more beforehand for preferred seating. The Ubud Kecak and fire dance show listing runs on a weekly rota of venues; the stage gates open from 18:00 to 19:30, the dance starts at 19:00 and guests are asked to be seated 30 minutes or more beforehand.

For Ubud, that rota includes Sayan, ARMA, Peliatan Palace and Pura Dalem Kutuh Kaja, among others, and the voucher names the venue. The ministry's wider list of Kecak stages includes Pura Dalem Ubud and Padang Tegal Stage, and names Pura Uluwatu as the best place to watch it at sunset.17

Clothing differs a little. The Kecak listing asks for modest dress and a thin jacket or shawl against the cool of the evening, and avoids flash. For the palace, reviewers mention mosquitoes and the value of arriving early, so repellent and a spare layer cover both.

A two-night plan

Legong one night, Kecak another

  1. Night one, 45 min before

    Reach the palace

Be at the gate 45 minutes or more before 7:30 PM, the listing suggests, for preferred seating.

  2. Night one, 7:30 PM

    Legong begins

The palace show runs about 90 minutes with live gamelan.

  3. Night two, 18:00

    The Kecak stage opens

Gates stay open from 18:00 to 19:30 at the venue on your voucher.

  4. Night two, 30 min before

    Settle into your seat

The Kecak listing wants guests seated 30 minutes or more beforehand.

  5. Night two, 19:00

    Kecak begins

The chanting and torchlight start at 19:00, and the listed duration is 1 hour.

  6. Afterward

Prices, refunds and access

Prices are almost a tie. The palace Legong ticket starts from $6, the Ubud Kecak ticket from $6, and the Uluwatu Kecak ticket from $9. The Uluwatu stage lies on the south-west coast, at a different end of the island from Ubud.18

The refund terms differ. The palace ticket cannot be refunded and holds only the date you picked, while the Ubud Kecak listing and the Uluwatu listing state free cancellation up to 24 hours before for a full refund.

On access, the palace listing is wheelchair and stroller accessible, and the Ubud Kecak listing is wheelchair accessible with a skip-the-ticket-line feature, though it asks guests to check venues for specific needs. Both are open to children; the palace charges the same admission to children and adults.

Compare what the price buys, not only the number. The palace listing's breakdown scores transportation 3 and value for money 4.5, while the Ubud Kecak listing scores guide 4.5, transportation 5 and value for money 4.5, from 4,421 and 3,413 reviews respectively. Those ratings describe the booking experience, not the dance itself.

Both in one trip

The two shows overlap on the clock, the Kecak at 19:00 and the Legong at 7:30 PM, so they need separate nights. That is easy in Ubud, where the Kecak listing offers a different venue most evenings and the palace show runs daily.

A simple plan: book the refundable Kecak ticket for a night you can still adjust, and the palace Legong for a night you have fixed. If you would rather have both nights organized by a driver, the private evening tour from $39 includes a Legong performance inside Ubud Palace.

Legong or Kecak dance for a single night? Choose by mood. Pick Legong for a seated, detailed court dance in a palace courtyard. Pick Kecak for chanting, torchlight and the Ramayana. Our two-question chooser at the top of this page maps your answers to a listing.

Courtesy for any Balinese stage

Both dances have lives beyond the ticket line. Legong is performed during temple ceremonies and festivals as an offering to the gods, and the ministry notes that Kecak was initially developed for tourist performances and has since become part of Bali's cultural identity.19,20 UNESCO's committee also encouraged Indonesia to keep addressing possible threats from promoting Balinese dance festivities for tourists.21

Good manners follow from that. Take your seat before the start, keep your voice low during the music and hold the phone steady and dark. The Kecak listing says photography is usually allowed and asks guests to avoid flash so the performers are not disturbed. The same courtesy suits the palace courtyard.

Expect some variation. The palace listing does not itemize its running order, and the Kecak listing says shows differ by day and venue, so what you see may not match a photograph or a friend's report. Treat that as part of seeing a living tradition rather than a fixed attraction.
