Choose an area before you choose a bed

Searches for the best hotels in Ubud, Bali start with names, but for an evening at Ubud Palace the area decides more than the building does. We sell no rooms, so this page measures Ubud's stay areas against the palace gate and leaves the booking to you. Which hotel is best is a matter of taste and budget; the choice that matters for the palace is the area. The distances come from OpenStreetMap points and are straight lines, not routes.7

The ministry offers one framing. If your priority is the nature of Ubud, it suggests accommodation off the heart of town, among greenery and the sounds of nature, while for staying close to the action it says there are numerous choices in the city center.3 Everything else on this page is a variation on that choice.

The palace sits in the middle of the center option. The tourist information point is 55 m from its gate and Pura Desa Ubud 94 m.7 From a room in that core you reach the show on foot in minutes; from the green edges you ride.

Is Ubud walkable?

Indonesia.Travel calls Ubud relatively small and suggests getting around on foot, by bicycle or on a rented motorbike.1 It also warns of hilly terrain and advises asking locals which places are easier to explore on foot, by bicycle, motorbike or car.2

In straight lines from the palace, Taman Saraswati lies 162 m away, Museum Puri Lukisan 317 m, Pura Dalem Ubud 515 m and the start of the Campuhan Ridge Walk 910 m.7 Those are easy strolls on level ground and harder work on hilly lanes in the afternoon heat, so test a route in daylight before you rely on it at night.

Farther out, the Monkey Forest main entrance and Puri Agung Peliatan are each 1.4 km away, the ARMA museum 1.8 km and the Neka Art Museum 1.9 km.7 That is a walk of real length if the road climbs, and the ministry's advice to ask locals applies in full.2

Four ways to place yourself around the palace

Hotels near Ubud Palace fall into distinct groups by side of town. The central lanes put the tourist information point, Pura Desa Ubud, Taman Saraswati, Museum Puri Lukisan and Pura Dalem Ubud between 55 m and 515 m from the gate.7 The Ubud Art Market is at Jl. Raya Ubud No. 35, a morning stroll the ministry recommends.13 Choose this core if you want to walk to the show and back, and accept that central streets are the busy ones. Expect shops, cafes and traffic by day, and quieter side lanes once the market closes.

The Campuhan side begins at the Campuhan Ridge Walk, 910 m from the palace.7 The ministry says the ridge takes about 15 to 20 minutes to the peak with no eateries on the way.9 It suits walkers who like green views at breakfast and don't mind a longer stroll or a short ride to the courtyard.

The Monkey Forest side lies 1.4 km from the palace at its main entrance, and the forest holds Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal.7,10 The Peliatan side centers on Puri Agung Peliatan, also 1.4 km away, a royal house that often stages Legong and gamelan of its own.11,7 On both sides plan a ride at night.

Choose your corner of town

Which area fits your evening?

The palace show is short and the town is hilly, so one question settles most choices: how will you get back?

  • If I want to walk to the show and back

    Stay in the central lanes

The tourist information point and Pura Desa Ubud lie 55 m and 94 m from the gate.7

  • If I want green views at breakfast

Look off the heart of town

The ministry suggests accommodation away from the center for the nature of Ubud.3

  • If I dislike late rides

Choose a lit main street home

The UK government advises avoiding poorly lit areas when out at night.8

  • If I land tired from the airport

    Arrange the transfer in advance

The ministry warns that a prepaid cab from the airport can cost quite a lot.12

  • If I travel with a stroller or wheelchair

    Stay on the central stretch

The show is stroller and wheelchair accessible and Ubud's terrain is hilly.2

  • If I want a refundable plan

    Keep the room flexible

The show ticket is non-refundable and valid on the chosen date only.

Getting home after the show

The listing sets the show for 7:30 PM with a running time of about 90 minutes, and it advises arriving at least 45 minutes early, so the evening runs from about 6:45 PM to about 9:00 PM. It includes no pickup: guests go straight to the palace.

For the ride back, the UK government advises using only registered taxi companies, checking the driver's identity and, for app bookings, checking that the driver matches the person shown in the app.4 It also advises being alert when out at night and avoiding poorly lit areas.8

Arrange your ride or your walking route before the last bow. If your room is close to the center, a lit main street is the sensible way home; if it lies beyond the Campuhan ridge or the Monkey Forest, book a car. Ask your host to save the room address on your phone in Indonesian, so that a driver can read it at a glance.

Is Ubud safe? What the governments say

Australia's Smartraveller advises a high degree of caution in Indonesia overall due to security risks.5 It says petty and violent crime occurs and advises being alert in taxis and rideshares, public transport, crowds, bars and nightclubs.6

The UK government says bag-snatching is often reported in Bali and advises concealing your bag and carrying only essential items.20 It also says reported cases of rape and sexual assault are high in Bali and Lombok, and urges care when out at night.8

None of this is specific to Ubud, and an evening at the palace follows ordinary travel sense: carry little, keep your phone away from the roadside, stay with your group and watch your drink. Smartraveller lists local emergency numbers: fire services 113 and ambulance and rescue services 118.19

Before you book a room

Stay checklist

Choosing the room4

  • Compare the distance to the palace gate, not just the district name
  • Check the last stretch of road from the room to a main street
  • Check steps and slopes if you travel with a stroller or wheelchair
  • Fix the show date first: the ticket is non-refundable

On show night3

  • Voucher and levy confirmation on your phone
  • Leave in time for a 6:45 PM arrival
  • Water and mosquito repellent in your bag

The way back4

  • Registered taxi company or app, with the driver's identity checked
  • Walk only on lit streets
  • Bag zipped, only essentials carried
  • Emergency numbers saved: 113 for fire, 118 for ambulance

Rules and costs worth knowing before you book

The provincial circular requires foreign visitors to pay the tourist levy electronically and lets attractions deny access to tourists who have not paid.21,22 Settle it before your first outing so that the palace gate is never the place you discover it.

That circular also expects modest, respectful dress at temples, attractions and public spaces,23 which includes the walk between your room and the gate. It also asks foreign visitors to exchange money only at authorized changers with the official QR code from Bank Indonesia.24

A prepaid cab straight from the airport can cost quite a lot, the ministry warns; ordinary taxis, rental cars and buses also reach the town.12 Settle the airport transfer before you land, and book a room whose address a driver can find.

Match the area to the kind of trip

For a first evening in Ubud, centrality wins. A room in the lanes near the palace turns the show into a stroll, leaves the mornings for museums and avoids a late ride home. Art stops named by the ministry, among them the Neka Art Museum, ARMA, Museum Rudana and the Blanco Renaissance Museum, fill a daytime easily.18

For a nature-first stay, take the ministry's advice and look off the heart of town, then budget for a ride to the palace each evening.3 Compare two things before booking: the distance to the gate and the final stretch of road, which a map cannot show you. A quiet room that needs a long ride after every show is a different purchase from a lively one next door to the gate.

For families or anyone with limited mobility, note that the show ticket is wheelchair and stroller accessible and charges children and adults the same rate, and that Ubud's hills favor a room on the central stretch.2
